Friday Night Lights will change your life.

The final episode of Friday Night Lights airs tonight.  I was a little late to the Friday Night Lights party.  I started a couple years ago, but as many of you know once you start it’s hard to stop and thanks to Netflix it didn’t take me long to get “caught up”.

I spent 12 years in youth ministry and after the birth of our son I took a break from being directly involved in the lives of teens.  The last few years have been an incredible journey that have brought us to the point of preparing to return to youth ministry and leadership development.  How did we get to this point and what does it have to do with Friday Night Lights?

My alma mater and current employer, Pacific Lutheran University has prioritized helping students and staff realize their vocation and where their passion meets the world’s need.  I’ve had the opportunity to hear from incredible speakers, do some reading and personal assessments.  As I came to a more defined idea of where my skills and passion aligned, I was also watching Friday Night Lights.

Was FNL dramatic? Yes, but it heightened some of the real issues, hurt and struggle kids experience through adolescence.  As I walked the halls of Dillon, TX with the Taylors, I related those experiences to my own experiences with students in the halls of schools in Tacoma, Puyallup or Ellensburg, WA.  Something was happening.  I remember asking myself, “Is God using FNL to reawaken my heart for teens?”

The last few years have been a time of discovery, putting words to feelings and listening for God’s voice.

“What was said to the rose to make it unfold, was said to me, here in my chest.” – David Crowder
